North of Nowhere, Steve Hamilton, St. Martin's, $23.95.

Steve Hamilton is cruising in a cool Michigan groove that I think many of us hope will go on and on - this installment in the life of reluctant PI Alex McKnight, citizen of the tiny upper peninsula town of Paradise, Michigan, finds Alex on the case when one of his best friends is accused of a crime Alex knows in his heart he didn't commit. Full of Hamilton's trademark humor, deadpan dialogue, and sharp plotting skills, this is one of the more enjoyable reads of the year.
