Wet Grave, Barbara Hambly, Bantam, $6.50.
This feels to me like a wrap up of certainly one of the most heartbreakingly beautifully written series in all of mystery.
Featuring freed slave Benjamin January, set in New Orleans in the 1830's and 40's, reading Hambly's prose puts you right
there. In this novel January accompanies his long time lady friend, Rose, out of town when things get a little too hot for
him. This novel includes buried treasure, pirates, and alligators, and is a truly exciting read - but it's also a serious
look at the way slaves and African Americans were treated at the time. January is also one of my very favorite characters
in mystery, and if you read even one of these novels, you'll see why - handsome, smart, musically gifted, sensitive yet
manly - maybe he's too good to be true, but he sure is fun to read about.
